Best known as the Scottish National Jazz Orchestra’s drumming dynamo, Alyn Cosker launched his career as a bandleader with the album Lyn’s Une for Linn Records in 2009. His group has since appeared at Glasgow and Edinburgh jazz festivals and at Celtic Connections and has supported the legendary guitarist John McLaughlin & the 4th Dimension, winning an enthusiastic response from the audience and vociferous approval from McLaughlin himself.
With the Scottish National Jazz Orchestra Cosker has featured alongside innumerable top American musicians, including Randy Brecker, John Scofield, Mike Stern, Kurt Elling and Dave Liebman and as a freelance musician he has worked with guitarist Larry Carlton, the star session player of Steely Dan and Joni Mitchell fame, and appeared at Ronnie Scott’s jazz club in London with Venezuelan pianist Leo Blanco.
His group features Steve Hamilton on keyboards (currently touring with drum legend Billy Cobham and formerly of Bill Bruford’s Earthworks), guitarist Davie Dunsmuir (Wolfstone and Scott Wood Band) and first-call bass guitarist Colin Cunningham.
Cosker is one of the most powerful young drummers on the vibrant Scottish jazz scene, handling everything from saxist Tommy Smith’s Coltrane-to-Garbarek world to Buddy Rich tributes with the Scottish National Jazz Orchestra.
